LETS TALK SCALE
Not all tile shapes and sizes work well in every room. We wanted to provide a few rules of thumb to go by when selecting the correct tile size for your project.
the bigger the room, the larger the tile. The smaller the room, the smaller the tile. This one seems simple but can often be the reason a tiny bathroom feels even smaller.if you have a plain tile, increase the style with an interesting laying pattern. The humble 300 x 600 gloss white wall tile can be elevated to another level with some creative laying - try a vertical brick bond pattern.grout lines attract the eye. Have you noticed the girl in the vertical striped dress looks taller? Same principle with tiles - use the grout lines to your advantage. In a room with a low ceiling, lay narrow 300 x 100mm tiles vertically on the wall in a stack bond pattern to create lots of vertical lines. The lines draw the eye and create a taller feeling in the room.
There is certainly a few exceptions to the above rules but if you start with these principles, you will be well on your way to a designer masterpiece.
LETS TALK TEXTURE
Choosing the right texture of tiles will ensure that they perform in your chosen application.
We have put together a quick list of all the available texture types for both man made tiles and natural tiles and their uses.
FINDING A TILER
Its important to make sure you have the right people doing your install. The most beautiful tiles in the world cannot out-shine a mediocre installation.
Depending on the size of the job, you may want to do the work yourself. This is fine for smaller projects but as the complexity increases, there is plenty of advantage in calling on some expert help.
Smaller local tilers from the local papers can often be the most cost effective solution to a residential project. By minimizing daily travel expenses and down-time sitting in traffic, they can focus on getting the job done. Be sure to request job references of other customers as there is less consistency with the small contractors. There is plenty of gems out there in this category.
GROUT
It is often asked what the purpose of grout actually is. Grout is used to fill the spaces in-between tiles.
So if we get rid of the spaces in between the tiles, does that mean we don’t need grout? Not quite.
The spaces are there to help make up for the slight size variation that is inherent in all tile sizes. The greater the variation in size of the tile, the larger the grout joint you will want to use to help minimize the look of unequally sized tiles.
Grout has a functional purpose but it can also be used to dramatically change the look of your tiles. The more grout lines, the greater the impact they will have on the overall appearance. Play around with color and size to make your project unique.
